The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
